The plaintiff alleged a machine spontaneously resumed operation while she was cleaning it.

A jury awarded nearly $30 million to a woman whose right hand was severed while she was cleaning the interior area of a lid-producing machine in a Miami factory.

On July 16, 2013, plaintiff Elizabeth Canales, 32, a packer, worked at a factory that was located at 9320 NW 102nd St., in Miami. Canales was retrieving and boxing plastic soft-drink lids that were being created by a thermoforming machine. During the course of that task, the machine, a VFK-1000 ThermoFormer, required refilling of its supply of plastic. The machine was resultantly disabled. Canales was directed to clean the machine. While she was doing so, the machine spontaneously resumed operation. Canales’ right hand was severed.
